Reflective Narrative
MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge, is the learning outcome were students will develop an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and they will be able to formally use it in an appropriate level. This outcome usually requires from two to six courses depending on one’s concentrations. In my case, since I was not going to focus on the Linguistics aspect of the language, I met my requirement with two courses: Span 301 (Composition and Oral Practice) and Span 305 (Spanish for the Professions). Span 301, gave a general introduction of the linguistics and history of the Spanish language. However, it focused greatly on the grammatical part of the language. As students, were expected to reach and advanced level of grammar. Every written assignment that was turned in was carefully looked at and revised until it reached grammatical perfections; one was constantly learning from its own mistakes and growing through the language and guidance of the instructor. It was great to see the progress of my vocabulary and my grammatical awareness. My writing definitely reached another level after having taken this course. Span 305, for its part, concentrating in getting the student to use the language in a professional setting. We went over formal ways of speaking and interacting with other at a professional level. Our work focused a lot on the preparation we would need to use our Spanish once we went out to the world and integrated the job market. The instructor was trying to forge professional individuals who will know how to conduct themselves in an appropriate matter with the usage of the target language. This course definitely added to my professional vocabulary and it went beyond the common use of the Spanish language in order to give us conscience of using the language in a more advanced level. I will be sharing some of the work that I performed in both course as a way to show the evidence of having meet the outline standards of the major learning outcome. For Span 301, I will include a few of my writing assignments were one can see the process of revision that I mentioned above. As for Span 305, I will be sharing samples of assignment that reflect the writing for formal letter and a resume.
