Integrative Narrative
Before entering college, I began to analyze what I was truly passionate about and what would I chose as a career. It was quite a complicated decision; I knew that whatever I choose had to be something that I honestly liked so that I wouldn’t regret it later on. As I looked back into my life, I realized that what I had enjoyed the most about my high school years had definitely been my Spanish classes and the passion that my teachers portrayed within their classroom setting. From then on, I began to look at teaching as one of my possible careers and what better subject to teach than one I truly enjoyed learning about? When I applied to CSU Monterey Bay, I looked for the availability of Spanish as a major. I became quite interesting as I read the description that the World Languages and Culture department had set up, in which they also included the two concentrations for the major. As soon as I saw the concentration of Literature and Culture, it grasped my attention right away. Spanish literature had become a subject that interested me very much. I had begun discovering poets like Neruda and writers like Garcia Marquez that had captivated me with their works and they planted the seed of curiosity in me to discover more about the literary world of the Spanish language. I enter CSU Monterey Bay with the determination of acquiring my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and from then on, moving towards my single-subject teaching credential in order to become a secondary teacher. I have not regretted at all my incorporation to the Spanish major program and I find myself on the right path towards reaching my final goal of becoming an educator.
Overall, I have learned much from the Spanish program at CSU Monterey Bay. If I compare the freshman that came in the fall of 2010 with the person who graduated with a B.A. in Spanish, I can see an exorbitant sequence of academic growth through my path. My initial expectations were to gain higher level of my Spanish proficiency as far as my writing, listening skills, and my speaking abilities. In addition, I wanted to broaden my knowledge of the Hispanic cultures and of course, to learned more about the discipline of Literature in the Spanish language. All of these initial goals were met. The courses that I took with concentration in the grammar and linguistics of the language helped me with my writing by showing me appropriate ways to create compositions, while also expanding my vocabulary and helping it reach a professional level in order to better off my listening and speaking abilities. Likewise, the courses with concentration in literature and culture were always enjoyable and a great source of new learning. I was taught how to view literature with a critical perspective; how to analyze what an author is trying to portrait to its audience and what details are paraphrase within his or her writing. I was also introduced to every single one of the Latin American countries and all of those pertaining to the Hispanic world, to their unique cultures, and to some of their historical and political background. It was delightful develop my knowledge through every single one of Upper Division Courses and to feel that little by little I was reaching my final goals.
I am quite proud to have to have grown in both, academic and personal terms, through my course at CSU Monterey Bay. I believed made the appropriate decision by having chosen the Spanish program and the concentration on Literature and Culture. What I have learned has deeply enhanced my abilities with the language and in addition my concentration created a deeper conscience in myself which allows me to view the world in a more global perspective. Tis for me means, that I realize that there are a series of cultures, so many backgrounds, and many beliefs that come all together to constitute the world in which we live and that as individual we shall be receptive to the uniqueness and background of every person, because there is always something new for us to learn out there. As a future educator, I plan to apply the knowledge I have acquire through my Spanish program. I am planning to go on and teach Spanish with the particular emphasis of the culture and the literature of the Hispanic world. I believe that both of these disciplines have much offer and I will love for my future students to be able to discover them.
